Relative Pay and Labor Supply

چکیده
The authors use a laboratory experiment to examine the impact of relative wages on labor supply. They test the hypothesis that, ceteris paribus, making a given wage high (low) relative to other wage levels will lead to an increase (decrease) in labor supply. They find that labor supply does respond significantly to relative pay, and in the expected direction. However, when a strong enough reason is given for the relative low pay, this difference disappears. JEL Classifications: J22, J31, D03

Market Forces and CEO Pay: Shocks to CEO Demand Induced by IPO Waves
I develop a simple model of wages set in competitive equilibrium and derive predictions regarding the response of wages when an inelastic supply of CEO labor cannot match an increase in demand. The model predicts that the CEO pay-size elasticity increases when more firms compete for a fixed supply of managers, a prediction robust to a broad class of distributions commonly used. I then empirical...

We categorized this indicator into 2 indicators of female and male labor force participation rates...

Firm-Level Monopsony and the Gender Pay Gap Using a dynamic labor supply model and linked employer-employee data, I find evidence of substantial search frictions, with females facing a higher level of frictions than males. However, the majority of the gender gap in labor supply elasticities is driven by across firm sorting rather than within firm differences, a feature predicted in the search t...

Can changes in teacher pay encourage more able individuals to enter the teaching profession? So far, studies of the impact of pay on the aptitude distribution of teachers have provided mixed evidence on the extent to which altering teacher salaries represents a feasible solution to the teacher quality problem. One possible reason is that these studies have been unable to separate labor supply e...
